Saint Malo

Tourism

The discovery of the Americas and the development of trade with the Indies brought Saint-Malo its economic boom. There were more and more shipowners, and personalities of this period created the town's reputation. Jacques Cartier discovered and explored Canada, corsairs such as Duguay-Trouin and Surcouf harassed enemy merchantmen and naval craft. Some distinguished themselves in the sciences, such as Mauperthuis, or as literary men, like Chateaubriand. Today, the town's mariners compete in great yacht races, such as the single-handed Route du Rhum, whose course is between Saint Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre, or the Transat Québec–St-Malo for crewed craft.
