Saint Malo

It is with the discovery of America and the development of trade with India that Saint-Malo takes off economically. Shipowners become more numerous and figures from this era make the city famous. Jacques Cartier discovers and explores Canada, corsairs harass enemy merchant and military navies, such as Duguay-Trouin or Surcouf. Others are illustrated in science, such as Mauperthuis, or in letters like Chateaubriand. Today sailors compete in major sailing races such as the lonely Route du Rhum that runs from St-Malo to Pointe-à-Pitre where La Transat Quebec - St-Malo crewed.
